Culture and Sport Minister John Griffiths AM, this week urged workers to use national Bike Week as a springboard to start cycling to work as he arrived at the Welsh Government’s weekly cabinet meeting by bike.
Bike Week, which is held from June14th to June 22nd, is an annual event to promote cycling and how it can be easily incorporated into everyday life as well as highlighting the health and environmental benefits cycling can bring. The overall aim of the week is to encourage people to give cycling a go, whether for fun or to make short journeys. Making it easier and safer to walk or cycle on short journeys is the key aim of the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Act which will come into force later this summer. The Act places a duty on Local Authorities to make it easier for people to walk and cycle in Wales by providing suitable routes.
