If we are serious about reducing carbon emissions, then transport is a key.

If we want to provide housing to meet Cardiff’s growing population, then transport is a key.

If we want to shape a successful economy in a era of rapidly rising oil prices, then transport is a key.

The period in our history when transport policy began and ended with the needs of the car is coming to an end. The Labour-led Assembly Government has a good record of investing in new rail services and in promoting cycling and walking. The Safer Routes to School scheme is an excellent example of what can be done, in reducing accidents and promoting new, healthier ways of getting to school.

The future will need to see an even greater emphasis on making connections between different forms of transport – so that, for example, it is made as easy as possible for journeys to be made through a combination of bus and rail. Cardiff West has some of the most heavily used roads in the whole of Wales. Its streets are choc-a-bloc with cars competing for places to park. We are a living example of the reason why transport policy has to move centre stage over the next four years.
